Locally includes an MCP Server, so your favourite AI tooling can work with the infrastructure in your Locally environment - such as deploying an ARM Template, creating a Service Bus Queue or finding a user in the Directory.
You can add it to your AI tool using the Locally CLI. For example:
$
locally mcp install claude-code
You can also install the Locally Agent Skills, which teach your agent how to work with Locally - they're open source in the locallybuild/skills repository.
The Locally CLI can add the MCP Server to the following AI tools:
| AI tool | Name to use |
|---|---|
| Claude Code | claude-code |
| Claude Desktop | claude-desktop |
| Cursor | cursor |
| Gemini CLI | gemini-cli |
| GitHub Copilot CLI | copilot-cli |
| GitHub Copilot (VS Code) | copilot-vscode |
| OpenAI Codex CLI | codex-cli |
| OpenCode | opencode |
| Windsurf | windsurf |
You can see which AI tools you have installed, and whether the MCP Server has been added to each, by running:
$
locally mcp list
And remove it again with locally mcp uninstall. See the AI Integrations guides for more on setting up each AI tool.
Your AI tool starts the MCP Server when it needs it - but Locally needs to be running (using locally build) for its tools to work.
The MCP Server includes 70 tools, covering:
| Area | What your AI tool can do |
|---|---|
| Deployments | Deploy an ARM Template at the Subscription or Resource Group scope, or a Bicep file into a Resource Group (which needs the Bicep CLI installed). |
| Directory | Find users, groups, applications and service principals in the Directory Emulator, along with group members and owners, and role assignments. |
| DNS | Create, get and delete DNS Zones, and create DNS Records. |
| Event Hubs | List, create and delete Event Hubs and Consumer Groups, and get a Namespace's connection string. |
| Governance | List Policy Definitions, Assignments and Initiatives, check a Subscription's compliance (including against ISO 27001, NIST 800-53 and CIS), and explain why a resource doesn't comply. Requires a Team plan. |
| IoT Hub | Get and delete IoT Hubs. |
| Key Vault | List, get, set and delete Secrets. |
| Locally Runbooks | List and deploy the Locally Runbooks from your team. |
| Resources | List the Resource Providers and Resource Types available, which API Versions you're using (and whether they're deprecated), and the Resources of a given type - or get one by its ID. |
| Service Bus | List, create and delete Queues and Topics, list a Topic's Subscriptions, and get a Namespace's connection string. |
| Storage | List, create and delete Blob Containers, Queues, Tables and File Shares. |
| Subscriptions and Tenants | List and get Tenants, Subscriptions and Resource Groups. |
Each tool is marked as read-only, or as one that makes changes - so your favourite AI tooling can ask before deleting something, or deploying a template.
If there's a tool you'd like to see added, please let us know and we'll take a look.
Should you encounter any issues, please take a look at the troubleshooting section.
